It’s not often an oyster farmer gets the opportunity to introduce a completely new and unknown variety of wine into the nation to match his oysters. But this story of one man’s passion is true.
About a decade ago we were exposed to piquepoul during one of our frequent forays along the Languedoc oyster coast. Stunned by the match with oysters, known since medieval times, it became a personal mission to get the right piquepoul clones for oysters into Australia. You can read the resulting media here.
Our vines are planted in beds strewn with oyster shell from our leases. And we joined forces with the good folk at neighbouring Windowrie Wines, who share our mission with great enthusiasm.
2016 Australian release
Described by chefs as a masterstroke wine match for our oyster portfolio, the Australian release of Borrowed Cuttings piquepoul went out to premium restaurants during July 2016. Exclusively for our oyster chef clientele, the project to get the piquepoul blanc variety as the perfect match for our oysters lifts the game to world heights.
The wine opens with a huge floral fruity nose and has an almost buttery texture embracing the luscious cream of the oyster. Even many minutes later a subsequent sip of Borrowed Cuttings piquepoul re-triggers an oyster umami tsunami on the palate.
